Latrobe Uni Hit Six

Latrobe Uni Womens Soccer team met Fawkner at home and put on a class performance, easily outplaying their opponents and scoring six unanswered goals in the process. Coach Victor Sekulov had the luxury of being able to field almost his full squad and it showed in the manner in which Latrobe took the game to Fawkner.

The game was only a minute old when Latrobe had the first chance to score. Jenna Carson won possession in the midfield and played it to Rosie Holgate, whose effort was desperately scrambled away by the Fawkner defence. Latrobe looked the more determined and again had a chance to score but the effort was easily dealt with. Fawkner launched their own attack but Beccie Ambrose and Marte Ur Lovaas combined well to stop the threat.

With five minutes gone it was 1-0 to Latrobe. Once again Jenna obtained the ball in midfield and played it across to Tory Pettit. Tory played it across to Lisa Doyle, who moved up to support the attack. Lisa then passed it to Rhiannon Streitberger on the wing. Rhiannon raced away from her marker and crossed the ball perfectly into the middle. The ball eluded all but Rosie, who ran in on the blind side and hit the ball sweetly on the volley. A well crafted goal and beautifully finished by Rosie.

Fawkner came back and a mix up in defence resulted in a corner. Hannah Matthew-Prosser calmly collected the ball from the cross and Latrobe were again on the attack. In quick succession Beccie played Tory through but she was called offside and then Jenna played Tina Schmidt through but Tina was unable to effectively control the ball and Fawkner were let off. But not for long.

Tina again received the ball just outside the penalty box when she was brought down by a tackle from behind. Tory dutifully took the free kick and curled the ball away from the keeper and into the net. It was 2-0 to Latrobe.

Marte got injured and had to go off giving Victor the chance to put Paula Massouh on for her Latrobe debut. Latrobe kept the pressure on and Melanie Meehan moved up the field and played a nice pass to Tina. Tina raced towards goal but the Fawkner keeper did well to scramble the ball to safety.

Tory worked her way through the midfield and passed to Nikki Garner. Nikki was in a one on one situation but her effort went wide. She would make amends shortly after. Fawkner attacked but Beccie was there to stop the threat and with the ball in her possession moved up and played it across to Tory, who moved wide. Tory curled the ball towards the penalty area and Nikki was there to race in and header the ball past the keeper. It was 3-0 to Latrobe.

Despite being 3-0 up Latrobe did not slow down. Rosie raced down the wing and her cross beat everyone, the ball bouncing across goal with no one there to take the opportunity. Another chance went begging when Nikki was again put through on her own but with the open goal beaconing she hit it just wide.

Rosie gain threatened down the wing and her pass found Tory in support. Tory passed to Nikki with her back to goal. Nikki laid a touch, turned and hit the ball with her right foot with such force it went through the Fawkner keeper’s hands. It was 4-0.

In the last few minutes of the first half Rosie tirelessly raced past her hapless marker and played it in to Paula, who in turn found Tory, who touched it on for Nikki but her effort was well saved by the Fawkner custodian. In fact the Fawkner keeper had done well to keep the score down to what it was. On the other side Hannah in the Latrobe goal had only touched the ball a couple of times.

Nicole Mills and Nikki combined well and earned a corner within the first minute of the second half. It came to naught but Latrobe almost immediately won the ball back and Paula combined with Tory, who forced another save from the goalkeeper for another corner. The corner was played in and the ball was cleared off the line. Tina raced in and hit the free ball on the volley but it went wide.

Latrobe completely dominated from the outset of the second half. Paula worked her way through the defence but could only hit her shot wide with tight defenders all around her. Minutes later Paula again worked her way through and passed it to Nicole for a corner. The danger was cleared only momentarily as the ball again found Nicole, who managed to get yet another corner.

Nicole hit the ball into the penalty area and it fell to Tory who, with assistance from a Fawkner defender, managed to put the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net. It was 5-0 now to Latrobe. And still Latrobe attacked. Rhiannon was brought down and from the free kick Tory hit the crossbar. A minute later Rhiannon again worked her way around her marker and managed to get yet another corner. The ball went just wide and Rosie ran onto it but her shot was well saved by the goalkeeper.

Fawkner were getting desperate in their defending and another free kick was awarded to Latrobe. Beccie took the free kick but Fawkner were able to deal with this threat. Nevertheless Paula and Rosie worked well together and won yet another corner. It was cleared but only for Latrobe to threaten again and earn another corner. Once again the Fawkner defence scrambled the ball clear.

A rare Fawkner attack was stopped by Beccie and she played Nikki through. From 10 metres out Nikki hit a thunderbolt with her left foot that beat the keeper and hit the back of the net. It was Nikki’s and Latrobe’s first hat trick of the season. All the more pleasing was the manner in which Nikki scored her three goals – a header, with her right foot and a screamer with her left. It was 6-0 to Latrobe Uni.

Justine Marum did well to elude her marker but her shot went straight at the keeper. Rhiannon forced a deflection for a corner and Justine headed just wide. Nikki received the ball and showed some clever skills which even the Fawkner players commented favourably on. Paula and Tory were combining well with Paula hitting her shot well over after some excellent inter passing play.

Tory and Paula again combined well with the Fawkner keeper forcing yet another save for yet another corner. Latrobe kept up the pressure into the last minutes of the game but could not add to the score.

Latrobe Uni coach Victor Sekulov commented, “We played probably our best football to date. The passing, interaction and clever running and support across the whole field was excellent. Our complete dominance was rewarded with our highest score for the season and there was little more that a coach could ask of his players. A great team effort and even I at times was caught just admiring the inter play and support across the field.

We have a lot to be proud of with this result. Not so much the score line but the manner in which we played. When the opposition comes up and admires our play and comments on it then I know we are on the right track.”

Latrobe Uni will be playing at Darebin Falcons on the 21st June. Kickoff is at 1.00pm.
