Under the grey skies of Bundoora, but in dry conditions (especially when
compared to Queensland, trust me), La Trobe fielded a strong team keen to
knock off Geelong who were yet to scratch up a point this season. The match
lacked intensity early and soon degenerated into a scrappy encounter. After
only 20 minutes supporters were taking bets on whether Paul would still have
his legs attached at the end of the match (some bets were taken that it
would be Nick or Tek who would actually rip them off). The classy left side link of Lucas and Cuong was again proving to be effective, moving the ball up the wing by stealth.
The partnership eventually led to the first La Trobe goal when Cuong’s knee-height cross found AD in the six yard box who headed it home.
The ref showed an amazing tolerance to late challenges, but was able to find a penalty foul for Geelong late in the first half. Despite the gift Geelong were
unable to convert the penalty, sending it wide of the left post. Not long after though, Geelong capitalised on some poor marking by La Trobe and equalized.
The goal came with some controversy as the goalscorer was standing in a dubiously offside position next to the goal post.
But like a well oiled machine a link-up across the midfield delivered the ball to Damir whose shot was parried by the keeper into the path of Pat who
confidently took the chance to put Uni two one up.
Following the half time break the game again resembled a mosh pit rather
than a soccer match. It was Archie who seemed to enjoy this the most,
eagerly bouncing in and out of multiple clashes along the right wing.
As the game stood for anyone’s taking it was La Trobe’s back man Lino that put the game to rest when he dribbled the ball past two challenges before smacking it between the keeper and the right post. Pat, who still regretted cancelling
his solarium appointment last week, chose to use the time during the goal
celebration to lie down and get some rays (he alleges he had cramp). Geelong scored a late goal, once again after poor marking. However, La Trobe composed themselves in the dying minutes to end the game 3-2. Paul decided to use the rest of his weekend to check out Royal Melbourne’s prosthetics ward for next time we play Geelong. AD asked Boston where he buys his clothes, keen to fill his wardrobe with some “big man” gear to suit his new image as an aerial specialist. A missing person report has been filed for Steve.
