The Flight of the Bald Eagle

The St Monica Breeding Sanctuary had a setback this week with the tragic loss of the two new eaglets. The Bald Eagles Breeding in Captivity Program has been successful in other habitats such as the nearby Reserves leagues however it appears the abnormally high levels of testosterone in the Thirds League may have become overbearing for the pair. In a new approach, a young adult male named David was added to the Bald Eagle colony in order to spark a reaction from the older inhabitants.

Wilko returned from life threatening injury to grace the forward line with All Beef Patty, Sava “Richard Gere” Liaskos and the Thai Superfreak. Tranner and Bruno joined the team for their virgin runs against Booroondara whilst the Dukes of Hazard was back in goals (this was a shock inclusion as we were under the impression the Bald Eagles had to have a new keeper very week). The day started off well for Jimmy Zap when he found out that the Bald Eagles hadn’t actually lost last week. Determined not to get caught out again with the wrong results he invited the whole Zapsalis family so they could closely monitor the scores in case he only got to play 89 ½ minutes again this game. Anything can happen in that ½ minute you’re off the ground.

With the backline looking thinner each week (Gerry still has Euro 2008 depression and Frank’s alarm clock forgot to wake him up at 2:45pm) there was a lot of pressure on Lou, Jimmy and Baxter. Although there were a few close calls, the Hazard and Co did extremely well to keep a clean sheet for the day. Hazard even tried a ‘speckie’ over the pack to try and beat Gerry’s sky dive hang-time record of 10.4 seconds. It was close but not enough to dethrone the Flying Dutchman. Next time he may want to grab the ball whilst he is up there (we believe that’s what keepers are meant to do!). The midfield was dominant with Luca, Gab, Robbie Slater, Bruno and Dave winning everything on the ground and Boz and Jimmy winning everything in the air. When the Bald Eagles knocked the ball around they looked capable of beating any team – that is until they got anywhere near the attacking 18 yard box

One of the most interesting statistics for the day was the Bald Eagles has 974 disposals for the day and 976 shots on goal. See www.gabmesiterstats.com.au for the full pie chart, flow chart and predictor graphs on where each shot could have landed. This time it wasn’t just All Beef missing the shots – you can add Dave, the Bororoondar left back, Boz, Richard Gere, Gabmeister, Robbie Slater, Boz again, the Booroondara sweeper, Alf, Luca – did we mention Boz?

There was that much paint (and wood) taken off the woodwork, Johnny A has put an urgent’ hurry-up’ on the new set of goals as it unlikely they will see the week out. All in all it was a good performance by the Bald Eagles but they were disappointed in having to settle for a 0:0 draw. Can someone please let Jimmy know the final scores?
